Director of Underwriting

Brethren Mutual Insurance Company

Building on 23 years of leadership experience, Rachel is currently the Director of Underwriting for Brethren Mutual Insurance. In her role, she enjoys coaching, training, and empowering others to align individual collective efforts and talents to a common goal. She's challenged by the opportunity to combine employee experience and skills with evolving technology and data analytics to improve processes, gain efficiency, enable employees, and improve customer experience.

Prior to Brethren, Rachel was in Auto Claims management with State Farm Insurance for almost 18 years. She was actively involved in project management, call center workflows, and individual and team development. She enjoyed the opportunity to create, test, train, and implement new approaches.

Outside insurance, Rachel also has prior experience as a leader in local government. During the initial phases of the Covid-19 pandemic, she served as the Director of Human Resources for the Washington County Board of County Commissioners. Her problem solving skills, adaptability, communication style, and leadership approach were strengthened by leading and influencing others through a very unique and challenging time.

Rachel earned a BA in Economics and Political Science with a Mathematics minor from Hood College and a MS in Management and Leadership from Western Governors University.  She holds the CPCU and several other professional insurance industry designations as well as maintains her SHRM-CP.

In her free time, Rachel is an active leader in her local church.  She mentors and encourages teens and young adults through small group facilitation.  Locally year-round and each summer, she enjoys volunteering and leading her youth group in community activities.
